Responsible
Care Program
An international
programme for the improvement of the Chemical Sector
In the 80s the need to respect the environment, safety and
health, now recognized all over the world, led the chemical
industry to develop and implement the Responsible Care programme.
The purpose was and is that of establishing the rules that
should be observed to comply with that need as well as with
the need to protect the resources of our planet, in line
with the concept of “sustainable development”
that had emerged during the UN Conference held in Johannesburg.
Responsible Care has anticipated many legal measures and
management systems and represents a dynamic programme promoting
“continuous improvement”. It is based on 8 guidelines
covering environmental problems, job security, health of
employees and of people in general. They are a clear and
rational guide for the companies in our sector which want
to operate in accordance with the best industrial practices.
AssICC has adhered to this
important initiative and, on the basis of an international
project specifically designed for chemical distribution,
has worked out a programme
- "Responsible
Care AssICC" - which goes along side the Responsible
Care promoted by Federchimica for the chemical industry
and represents the logic and complimentary continuity of
it.
Responsible Care includes also “Product Stewardship”
which covers the whole product lifecycle – from the
creation to its disposal – and the “ESAD”
evaluation system (European Single Assessment Document)
which, through third party assessments, assures that distributors
respect the principles of Responsible Care.
The participation in this programme, which has been developing
and getting more and more official acknowledgement worldwide,
represents an important advantage for companies and strengthens
the image of our Association.
Nowadays Responsible Care has specific national programmes
in 52 countries all over the world and is operative not
only in industrial countries, but also in developing areas.
It is acknowledged worldwide by UN and EU.
